Window Protection

Protecting your windows from storm damage is critical, as they are one of the most vulnerable parts of your home. Once your windows are breached, additional stress is placed on your roofing system from the wind and may lead to failure of your roof.

Window damage can come directly from extreme winds, but the more usual case is that windows are broken by flying debris. Tree branches, yard items, roofing tiles...all sorts of things can be windborne in a storm and hit a window.

Inexpensive window protection comes from using panels of plywood, sheet metal, or other strong materials that can be installed in the event of a storm and protect your glass surfaces from flying storm debris.

One popular item is Plylox clips which attach to sheets of plywood and secure them in window spaces. They hold tight under stress but can be installed and removed with relative ease. A box of 20 clips for 1/2" plywood run about $30, and 1/2" plywood is around $15 for a 4x8 foot sheet.
